Revitalising Your Land with Premium Recycled Topsoil

Unlock your farm's potential with high-quality, fully-tested topsoil, sustainably sourced from local construction projects.

At SoilMove, we bridge the gap between construction and agriculture. We rescue valuable topsoil destined for landfill and deliver it to you, helping you improve soil depth, fertility, and crop yields. Our rigorous, three-part testing process guarantees that you receive only the best soil, tailored to your farm's needs. Save on costs, boost your soil's health, and contribute to a circular economy.

Our Comprehensive Soil Analysis - The 'Soil-Sense' Triple Check

We believe in complete transparency. Before any soil arrives at your farm, it undergoes our unique 'Soil-Sense' Triple Check, ensuring it meets the highest standards for agricultural use. This process combines established UK government and industry standards with our own advanced biological analysis.

1. Desk Top Study

First, we assess your farmland location by undertaking a Desk Top Study, comparing nearby construction project’s, and assessing the potential to ‘Transplant’ topsoil from ‘Donor’ to ‘Receiver’ farm projects. This desk top study appraises criteria, required by regulators, to allow future topsoil restoration transfer.

  • Ecology: We review ecology data to ensure all proposed ‘Transplant’ projects do not adversely affect nature.

  • Flood Risk: Risk assessment of flood maps ensures nominal land raising will not increase flood risk.

  • ALC Classification: We typically screen out ‘Donor’ topsoil, below Grade 3a, to ensure you only receive high quality productive material. Grey-belt ‘Donor’ developments can often displace BMV soils. BMV Grey-belt or Greenfield topsoil can be offered to farm ‘Receiver’ land as a valuable circular economy commodity.

  • Biosecurity: Testing of ‘Donor’ and ‘Receiver’ sites for invasive plant and animal species reduces Biosecurity risks.

  • Soil Classification: Testing topsoil quality is key to ensure improved productivity at ‘Receiver’ sites.

  • Sustainability: Fuel use savings generated by transferring topsoil locally enable’s carbon efficient sustainable topsoil re-use.

2. British Standard for Topsoil (BS 3882:2015)

Provided your farm’s Desk Top Study does not raise any barriers we then test the physical and chemical properties of local ‘Donor’ soil and your ‘Receiver’ soil against the British Standard BS 3882:2015 for Topsoil. This is the industry benchmark for quality and safety. Our laboratory analysis covers:

  • Soil Texture: We determine the particle size distribution (sand, silt, and clay) to ensure good structure, drainage, and workability.

  • pH and Nutrient Levels: We test the pH and available levels of key macronutrients like phosphorus (P), potassium (K), and magnesium (Mg) to confirm the soil's fertility.

  • Organic Matter Content: A crucial indicator of soil health, water retention, and nutrient supply. We ensure it meets the standard for multipurpose topsoil.

  • Contaminant Screening: The soil is rigorously tested for heavy metals and other potential contaminants to guarantee it is safe and clean for agricultural use.

3. Biological Health Grade

Healthy soil is living soil. This is where we go beyond the standard tests. Our unique Biological Health Grade assesses the life within the soil, which is the engine of fertility and resilience.

  • Microbial Biomass: We measure the population of beneficial bacteria and fungi. High microbial activity is essential for nutrient cycling (N↔NH4+↔NO3−) and disease suppression.

  • Earthworm Count: We conduct a physical count of earthworms, nature's best soil engineers. Their presence indicates good aeration, drainage, and soil structure.

  • Organic Matter Quality: We analyse the stability and composition of the organic matter, ensuring it can support a thriving soil food web. 🕸️

Our Simple Grading System: Quality You Can Trust

We combine the results from all three checks into a simple, easy-to-understand grading system. This tells you exactly what you're getting.

Export to Sheets

We do not supply any soil that fails to meet the BS 3882:2015 standard. A full certificate of analysis is provided with every delivery.

Next Steps

We make acquiring high-quality topsoil straightforward and cost-effective.

  1. Initial Chat: Contact us to discuss your farm's needs, access, and the amount of soil you require.

  2. Source Matching: We identify a suitable local construction project with soil that matches your required grade.

  3. Testing & Reporting: We conduct the full 'Soil-Sense' Triple Check. You receive the report and analysis certificate before committing.

  4. Delivery: We arrange for the soil to be delivered directly to your farm at a time that suits you.

Indicative Costs

Our goal is to make saving topsoil affordable to farmers and agricultural landowners. Regulators consider soil to be a commodity and therefore, under current legislation, has to be sold by the construction industry, even if the purchase value is close to Nil cost.

The primary cost for contractors is transport, testing and regulator approval, the value of which depends on several factors bespoke to your land. This cost can often be absorbed by the contractors because sourcing local topsoil ‘Receiver’ farm sites minimises lorry mileage, saving contractors money and reducing environmental impact.

Before any work is progressed, we will provide a fully transparent contract and access licence that will need to be entered into before any testing of soil is undertaken.
